Today we got upgraded to the biggest room in the Radisson Suites Bangkok. It’s an awesome room I must say.
I pretty much followed all the steps I gave in my post on how to get room upgrades at hotels.
We checked in at 1pm again and I’m only staying 1 night, unfortunately. Though I’m seriously considering doing a bait-and-switch, as they say. They give you the upgrade possibly because you’re only staying one night and therefore they can still sell it the next night. But if I book another night, usually if you book the same type of room that you booked last time they won’t demote you.
Being friendly might help but it seems that having a higher status takes the cake. Seriously, room upgrades like this don’t come to lower level members or non-members. Why would they reward a non-regular?
This is why I believe it’s important to get your status’ when they are free. I posted about the free Accor Platinum and the reality is that it won’t count for much, but here is my post on free Hilton Gold. The Hyatt Visa card gives free Platinum status but none of these are top tiers of a top program, but hey, I got upgraded as Club Carlson Gold, a mid-tier. And I’m currently working on a scheme to get free Marriott Platinum year round.
But even if you don’t stay at a Hilton or Hyatt, often you can status match to the program you do have points in. Why else would I be Club Carlson Gold? Simply contact customer service and ask for a status match, but be prepared to prove your current status or a competitors program.
Really, this is a post about why you need hotel status. I have free internet, when I normally wouldn’t and I’m in the largest room. Top tiers come with club lounge access where there is most often free food. I swear to you, it’s cheaper to be loyal.
