How did I use 17,500 United miles to see two Caribbean Islands and Panama? Better yet -how can you route to see 3 or more places with 17,500 United Miles? This is a post on how to use oneway awards to create 20 hour layovers in multiple hotspots at no extra cost.
Slightly more back story. It’s our anniversary coming up and I wanted to burn the remaining miles from a left over stash of United miles. But I only had 18,000 each – barely enough for the two of us to get a oneway to a Caribbean island. Then it dawned on me, we could burn those miles to Puerto Rico and use up the rest of my Southwest miles to get back (now that they opened up a new Baltimore to San Juan route (was it AirTran’s?)).
But the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to go to Aruba or Central America. So why not both?
Ya know how I also say you can book the craziest stopovers with United? Like routes that aren’t even close to on the way? Same same with layovers. And as long as they aren’t more than 24 hours, it doesn’t cost any extra. In this case I saw a stop in Aruba that was only 23 hours long. Enough to go to a hotel’s private island, snorkel and enjoy the beach. Then I noticed I could do nearly the same thing with other places like St. Maarten and Trinidad and Tobago.
To find routes that have a less than 24 hour turn around, you may just have to continually search oneways. After you’ve pieced together a route, try it out in the multi destination award search.
You’ll just have to play around and click through and see if it gives the price you want.
Next, Panama City is an area hub and has many options for long layovers. For as much time as we’ve spent in the PTY Airport, it seemed fitting to get out this time and spend 17.5 hours exploring the area. Then we continue on to San Juan.
There are other options but these are the three we narrowed it down to, due to the desire to make it a purely points adventure. We can burn either our Hyatt Category 4 certs, Marriott category 5 cert, or tap into the stash of Radisson points and there are many Radisson options on many of the routes we looked at.
We could have stopped in Houston for 18 hours as well to see my parents, but it wouldn’t work for the dates we wanted, and we quickly ruled out the option after being unimpressed by pictures of Trinidad. C’mon, the Beach Boys didn’t even bother to mention Trinidad, but I guess Port of Spain wouldn’t have fit as well lyrically.
So we could have gotten 18 hours in Houston but were picky with dates. So this is the itinerary we ended up with:
- 20 – 23 hours in Aruba, St. Maarten, Trinidad, etc…
- 17 hours in Panama City
- As long as we want to Puerto Rico
That instead of straight to Puerto Rico for the same cost. We’ll be using Southwest points to get back home.
But the best part? No extra cost. Plus, I was able to work in some other stops but I won’t go into to much detail as I don’t want to kill this.
The Kelly Blue Book value says these miles would be worth 7 cents a piece. But truthfully, this is a little fast paced for me and a little too much economy, but they’re at least short hauls. Still, it’s nice to be in one place for like 4 days. And I would have been happier if my first night was in Houston rather than DC (which is a two hour drive from our place anyways).
Now I can’t explain everything it allows you to route though, as sometimes it lets you back track and sometimes it doesn’t. These routes seem to work and others might not. But this same concept can be added on to a roundtrip which then allows stopovers. Aruba could have been my stopover, or perhaps I could add another destination as a stopover, making it an even crazier trip routing like this both ways and staying longer in a second destination as well.
This is just the same concept as always. Use the multi destination tool to book whatever trip you have in mind. Of course I was flexible with my destination and had to compromise a little. The end result is seeing some great beaches… Well I assume their great.
I mentioned in a post earlier, that this year I wanted to see more of the Caribbean and this is a chance to do just that. But again, this could be applied to other routes. I just found out my cousin is moving to the Toronto area so it would be nice to create a 23 stop there to visit. What the routes above show is that it doesn’t have to be on the way. Wherever it is, you may be able to book it as a layover at no extra cost and still saving your stopover if it’s a roundtrip ticket. Of course, it has to be a destination you want to see in 24 hours. Hong Kong in 24 hours? Sure. Bali? No way.
So any guesses as to which hotel where staying at? Also, if you have any suggestions on Panama City in 17 hours, please let me know. Jungle? Snorkel? Stay in the City? No clue…
I’ve really learned a lot of from your posts on getting creative with United stopovers to really stretch your miles.
By the way, congrats on the interview in Million Mile Secrets!
Thank you for you interview on MMS. You are so frank and just say it as it is! Thanks for all of your hard work. I’m looking forward to reading your blog.
My one-way on a recent United reward was Wichita-Denver-Chicago-Zurich-Zagreb-Skopje-Ljubljana-Vienna-Larnaca.
This kind of opportunity – and the fact that partner flights are easy to find – is why United is now my favorite program. I agree that I don’t know what routings will or won’t work – just trial and error with “multiple destinations” at the website.
I’d do the old city and canal for Panama. Easy, convenient and reasonably priced.
I’d agree pretty much with Wandering Aramean. 17 hours isn’t enough to do snorkeling so the canal and Casco Viejo are the best bets. Since you mentioned jungle you could go to The Discovery Center in Soberania National Park which is a park with trails and exhibits but you would have to take a taxi which I’m guessing would be close to $40 round trip and admission is somewhere around $10-$20.
@ Marcus – Thanks a lot man! And I’m glad these type of United post have been helpful.
@ Kira – Thanks, I don’t think I’m frank (or short winded) in person so I’m always surprised when I get emails from people saying they like my blog because it’s to the point. 😀 Glad to you have following.
@ DaveS – you’re clearly an old pro here. :-p
Yea, exactly! Don’t get me wrong I see the value in AA miles but if the goal is to see more of the world, how can you beat UA? It’s just unbelievable some of the things they let you route and to me that makes it way more valuable.
It is mostly trial and error. You can predict some errors (availability, time overlap or too long) but sometimes, United just doesn’t feel like it. Or something…
@ Wandering Aramean – Thanks for suggestion. I might do just that. A rental car is like $10 so I though about seeing the jungle. But the pics of the “old city” area look awesome.
I’m surprised the canal is worth seeing, I didn’t really consider it but will look into that as well.
@ Will – Yes, that’s the Park I was looking at! I mean is that something I could do in the afternoon/evening? And again, car rentals are real cheap.
I stumble across your website/blog via Million Miles Secret, article ““We know we’re the poorest people in the lounge…” and started reading this (about 2 hours and counting now) and went amaze with all these valuable facts. Excellent work. I think the more frugality a individual is, the smarter they’re are at for bargains. Me and my wife have been married for 4 years and we haven’t done a anniversary since marriage. Also with a mortgage, there’s not much of “extra” money to dole out. Anyway, to my question, when did you created the St. Maarten, Panama City and Porto Rico trip to fly from May 31 to June 3? I’m trying to do one for September and there’s nothing. Did you do the trip a minimum of 6 months out?
I personally booked the ticket the day I posted. So a month out. The problem with SXM is that one of the only routes is from PTY. So you can’t fly back to PTY because it’s a turn around flight and thus more than 24 hours. So you have to find a direct flight on US Airways, or another partner that gets in at 2pm (or whatever it is). I’m not currently seeing anything but you can try searching directly from different Star Alliance hubs. Email me and I’d like to take a look from where you are.
Thanks Dree. Your response is quick. I have 2 browsers going, one for reading articles on this value rewarding Travelisfree.com website and one at United.com. I’m looking at September right now and for some reason, i can’t get Panama City as the hub to come up.
You already helped a lot with the information. I’ll research myself and if i can’t get around for a day or 2, I’ll take you up on the offer by sending you an email. Thanks.
NP, certainly feel free to connect anyways.
I’ve used the same trick to get stopovers in several Asian cities on the way to/from India several times (my in-laws live there). I like your island hopping idea in the Caribbean even better though! SXM here I come! 🙂
Yea, the same concept applies anywhere really. Though I wouldn’t say the Caribbean is better than Asia. 😉
Travel is free – awesome site!!
Michelle S – Hi! Interested learning more about your layover/stop over adventures en route India. Appreciate if you share some the valuable info here (or pm me at dudesayz at gmail). Thanks!
Hi, I am new to use miles with layovers or stopovers. I have a basic question that do I need to reclaim checked bags when the layover is less than 24 hours. Any rules for United miles?
Thanks a lot!
To be honest, I never check bags so I’m not 100% sure. I’d be scared of something going wrong but I’m pretty sure on a long enough layover (especially one 23 hours long) you can at least ask that they only check bags to that location.
So……How are you getting home from SJU? Booking a separate one way ticket?
I am going to Thailand next March and I can’t even seem to book one 4 day stopover in BKK on the way to CNX. Even though I have to fly through BKK to get to CNX.
Flying Southwest home.
That’s odd. Send me an email with the dates you’re looking at and I’d be happy to look at the route.
Semi rookie here… can this be done if i live in SF?
oh i tried it, it will cost me 27K SFO – SXM / SXM – SJU
It should work the same, it’s just a matter of availability. I think it’s going to be hard to find a flight that works if it routes you through PTY first.
I redeemed 35K per person for SFO-> SXM (4 days) / SXM -> PTY (17 hrs layover) -> SJU (6 days) / SJU -> SFO flights in September.
@ Travel is Free, thanks for the tip and review. I now have a free (almost, $75 in taxes per person) 10 days trip to the Caribbean for our anniversary.
Awesome! That’s great to here. I think SXM is much nicer than Aruba , I’ve been to St. John and others in that area and the water is amazing. I mean, and Puerto Rico is in that area too.
And I’ll let you know how the 17 hour layover goes in PTY.
Enjoy!
Not sure if your trip is over, but when you’re in Panama, there’s a really nice guy named Steve who gives free walking tours of Casco Viejo (where you should stay if you don’t want to burn points at a hotel out of town- no hotels here! Magnolia Inn is one block from the main square and probably the cleanest hostel I’ve ever stayed in). Steve’s info is on tripadvisor, just search for it. Highly recommended!
I tried to do
PEK-NRT
NRT-PVG
each segment cost 10k, i put them together and leave 20 hours at NRT, it ends up adding them up and I got 20k
I tried another one and it gave me the same thing-adding the two up
does the system get “smarter”?
Great ideas to work with.. I am looking to go to Aruba for my destination so I am trying to go through Grand Cayman and Panama City. One thing I can’t figure out is how you determined the dates for the layovers? Did you just try one day apart? same day flights? etc.
Forgive me for reviving an old, old post, but how do you find long layovers like that? I’ve tried entering them as separate segments but no luck.
Yeah me to, I tried a simple one First/Business SYD-SEOUL-TAIPEI all under 23hr stops but it came in at a whopping 160k miles one way?
