This Conrad is known for being super modern and that must be the thing that does it for me. All though it’s a step down from the Park Hyatt Shanghai’s level of luxury (in my opinion), it has even more of a modern feel. Plus, the hotel has the biggest standard rooms in New York City (that I’ve seen).
Perhaps though it should be more compared to the Park Hyatt Tokyo. Although not quite as luxurious as either, the Conrad has light wood tones and chic, modern furniture. It should be stressed that this hotel is not only modern but has a super emphasis on it’s art. Art is a part of the hotel like no other hotel I’ve been to. There is the lobby’s massive hanging sculptural structures, its’ giant mural, unique artwork around the room and a book to talk about the hotel’s unique collection as a whole.
Still, the best part about the hotel is it’s practicality. If you have kids or a group, having dividers between the rooms and the bathroom is a big perk. Since the living room has a pullout couch (in many rooms), the dividers separate from both the living room and the bedroom to the bathroom. And these aren’t just “dividers.” They’re classy sliding walls. Also having a quality rain shower in its’ own room, separate from the toilet as well as a separate sink at the little bar area was very nice.
For 50,000 points it was a good deal as the rooms were going for $600 that night. However, I’m told prices drop to $250 at times. I wasn’t given an upgrade but they seemed packed. And the complaints are pretty accurate that breakfast is pretty slim. As a Gold, we had the option to pick one thing off of a “special” menu. It’s not big and I got no drink… but it was good food.
Most people wouldn’t find this hotel to be a good spot for tourism, but I love the quiet nights in Battery Park and it is right next to the World Trade Center monument. Too bad the damages from the flood had the main part of Battery Park closed off. Next time. This hotel is definitely in the running for my next NYC stay (if Hyatt points are being saved still). The wife says the hotel is in her top 5. Still, there are many Conrad Hotels to try out.
