The frequent flyer world is absolutely crazy! Diving into the world of frequent flyer miles is kind of like jumping into a sport and learning the complex team strategies without ever learning the basics, like how to throw or catch.
There are so many different types of currencies, bank points, airlines, hotels, etc… and within each of these currencies, each program has different rules. For example some points can be transferred to certain miles programs. And certain miles programs can be booked on certain airlines.
And what’s crazy is that people earn 100,000 miles through a credit card bonus with big plans, without ever knowing that the airline they have miles with will pass on $600 in fuel surcharges.
Signing up for credit cards before understanding anything about miles and points is kind of like having your 18 year old self decide your financial/debt situation and career for the rest of your life.
Oh, wait… Well. Anyways…
Not all miles are the same. Not all currencies are created equal. Not all bank points transfer. And heck, not all banks that do transfer points to miles, transfer at the same ratio.
So before you go earning tons of miles or points, know the difference!
This is why our first “Complete Guide” is the “Complete Guide to Miles Earning with Credit Cards.
It goes over:
- The difference between bank points, hotel points and airline miles.
- Transferring bank points.
- Avoiding “fuel surcharges” (and what they are).
- and Airline Alliances
At the end of this extensive guide you should know the basics of our sport.
Right now we’re giving away this first guide for free for signing up for the Newsletter.
Sign up now for the newsletter and get the “Complete Guide to Miles Earning with Credit Cards” (and still get the password to the advanced post on United Stopover tricks).
I guarantee this will change your life or your money back (because it’s free (because otherwise I wouldn’t bet much on the life changing part)).
Sorry drew, this question is related to the other post. for USAir,
the one open jaw allows, is there a time, days limitation between the two cities ? how long can I stay at one city before heading to the open jaw city for departure ? thanks
As long as you want. Or rather as long as tickets are bookable, which is usually like 330+ days out.
Looking forward to reading the full thing over the weekend, hopefully I can gleam a few tips from it.
Let me know what you think. 😉
Drew
Hey Drew,
Just wondering if I could get a copy of the complete guide if I’m already a subscriber to the newsletter?
Thanks, keep up the good work!
Current subscribers should have gotten an email after this post went live with the guide. If you didn’t get it, let me know.
I did not get it. Please send.
Also, another question for you. What service do you use for your newsletter? And how do you rated it for ease of use (from 1 to 10). Thanks
I didn’t get one either.
Looking forward to reading this. (hope to those of us already on the email list will have the opportunity)
Speaking of “big plans” for 100,000 mile cards, keen to read your take on the recent NASTY American Airlines rule changes. (I had been looking forward to getting the round the world pass — now gone w/o warning…. something bit worse than “crazy”)
Be curious to learn your updated thinking and tips on manufactured spends, esp. after the Vanilla Reload option at CVS now history.
So many bad changes I’m almost speechless.
It’s just. Wow. No warning. No positive changes. No communication at all. And what can you do really?
My only hope is that they make some positive changes when they merge regarding stopovers and what not.
Maybe I’ll put together some thoughts. IDK.
Yes, indeed….. alas. “wow.”
Happier news, fyi, found a high volume gas station market locally (here in Hoo’ville) where we can get the Vanilla Reload Cards — with credit cards. (to replace loss of CVS for the same) Curiously, they’re not on the Vanilla web site. 😉 Yet guessing you’ve already noticed.
Signed up for the newsletter, never got the guide. Where do I find it?
It should come after you confirm your email. Have you still not gotten it? If not, just reply and I’ll email you.
Hi. Am already an email subscriber….will we get the guide too?
Yes, that email went out shortly after this post went live. If you haven’t received it, let me know.
Hey Drew, I’m subscribed but still haven’t received the guide. If you could send one my way that would be awesome. Thanks!
Hey Drew, I’m a subscriber but haven’t seen the guide yet, could you please forward one. Thanks
I’m guessing by the comments the guide didn’t go out? I’m subscribed and didn’t get it either.Send it please? Thanks
Oh cool,,just got it. Thanks a bunch!
I subscribe your email, but there is nothing there this morning. Can you resend, please?
Thanks.

Hello Drew,
I have been following your blog for months now, it’s the best travel hacking blog out there for sure.
I was wondering if you can tell me a list of cards you currently possess, or perhaps even do a blog post on it?
Thanks!
