“How can you afford to travel?”
A lot of people really want to travel but feel as though they can’t afford it. In reality it’s about priorities because 99% of the time the person asking me makes more money than me. I guess I make miles and points and that’s what I value more than money at this time. But really there’s nothing wrong with not traveling and there’s nothing wrong with taking two week vacations or traveling a year at a time. But if you did want to travel longer, you could with a change in priorities.
Carrie and I were driving in the north east corner of New Brunswick and we saw this couple on the side of the road hitchhiking in the early morning. They were our age and full of smiles. We picked them up and actually spent the entire day together.
They were from France and they saved up enough money to be gone a couple of years. They started in eastern Canada and wanted to go across Canada, down the west coast USA into Mexico. They were WWOOFing the entire trip. They would contact their next gig when they landed at one, stay for two weeks and then head to the next.
He led me to believe that he saved up a bit but I can’t imagine he was spending to much money. His mode of transportation was hitchhiking and they WWOOFed for their room and food.
They had a Canadian National Park Pass and we stopped at one along the way. I was on a mission to see a bull moose but we saw none and continued on to eat dinner together in who-knows-where. We decided to take them all the way to their next WWOOF. It was a nice bed and breakfast on the St. Lawrence Seaway. It was awesome. They stayed in a room for free in exchange for some chores to help with the upcoming busy season.
It turned out to be an amazing view in an amazing area. I believe we’ll go back some time later but I also believe that we’re going to have to get into this WWOOFing in the near future.
