I’ll be posting videos every day for the next few days on the TravelisFree Instagram Stories (and eventually Facebook). Hopefully lots of beautiful clips of waterfalls, and more waterfalls.
(The photo linked to the right is a cave you can swim through at the Puente De Dios waterfall).
I decided on this route using my GoogleMaps strategy of saving places I want to go. Anytime I see something that looks amazing, I do a brief search for more photos of the area… and if it still looks great, I find it on Google Maps and save it. Doing this for a few years created a pattern from Monterrey to Mexico City.
Upon a little more research, this is what my Google Maps looks like when you zoom in on Mexico:
It’s a great way to plan a trip! When there are just so many compelling places in one area that you have to go!
Sometimes I just browse photos on Reddit’s /r/travel, and some of the locations I saved from talking to friends.
Just find the location on Google Maps and click “Save”.
Sometimes I save a specific site, sometimes a town. And this is the route I came up with:
- Monterrey
- El Meco
- Cascadas de Minas Viejas
- Micos Waterfalls
- Puente de Dios
- Tamul Waterfall
- Las Pozas
- Bernal
- Grutas Tolantongo
- Teotihuacán
(Then return the car at the Mexico City airport and Uber into downtown).
The Car Rental Issue
The reason I did a oneway was because Kayak originally showed very VERY cheap car rentals for a one week one-way. But after I booked flights, every car rental showed a $400 – $600 “one-way fee”.
So a $60 car rental, went up to $660.
Eventually I found a car rental that would do it more cheaply. But now I’ve decided it would be way better to start in Mexico City and do a loop to end back at the airport.
Something like this:
This route cuts out some waterfalls but saves some mountain driving.
Again, follow on our Instagram and Facebook to see daily videos of our Mexico time, and eventually I’ll do a full post here on the great waterfall roadtrip.
That Google Maps strategy is brilliant and I feel stupid for never having thought of it before.
I thought I was clever pre-mapping our hotel / main attractions, but this is a great way to plan, thanks for the tip man!
Also great to see you posting again! Your Blog was the best non-predatory Travel Blog in its prime, and technically still is =)
I’ve been following and it looks gorgeous! I knew Mexico was beautiful but way better than I imagined. Do you guys feel safe with the increase in violence?
I was just trying to figure out how to lay out favorites and eventually turn it into a trip! Also, would like some feedback on how safe you felt driving around. Great trip! Thanks!
Just taking a little vacation or will you be traveling more?
The Google Maps strategy is absolutely brilliant and I have absolutely adopted it. No more messy word document with too many links organized vaguely by country – now I can see exactly where everything is. Thank you so much! Just for that piece of advice, which is among the most valuable I’ve received in years, I’m definitely subscribing to this blog.
