IHG’s Big Win or now “Into The Nights”, is back for stays September 4 – December 31, 2014. The idea is that they send custom goals or custom promotions for each account.
Bonuses vary and every single person should check their account here. Who knows, maybe you’ll be one of the lucky ones that gets 100,000+ points for doing 3 stays. This more than any of them has the potential to be great for almost everyone.
But in my experience new accounts basically get the same promotion and newer accounts are generally more lucrative. This indicates that there’s some kind of algorithm to determine what your promotion will be based on past stays.
Earning
I did some investigative work (created a new test account) to see what new accounts get.
It appears a new account gets this promo:
- Complete 5of the 5
- Stay 3 nights
- Take a survey
- Stay two Saturdays
- Stay at two Holiday Inns
- Download and book on the IHG app
Completing all 5 offers would give 50,000 points.
In my experience, when it says “Holiday Inn” it does not mean “Holiday Inn Express” or “Holiday Inn Resorts”. Just plain, regular ole Holiday Inns.
And all this is based on the fact that the last two “Big Wins” allowed stays to count toward multiple goals. My stay at the Holiday Inn could count towards my 3 nights, one of my two brands, and booking direct… for example.
The reward would be:
- 50,000 points, OR
- 10,000 miles, OR
- 2 free nights
There doesn’t seem to be a lot of info in the terms and conditions but if you’re able to earn two free nights at any hotel, that could potentially be more value. Going to Bora Bora? 2 free nights. Going to chase the PointBreaks list with me? 50,000 points is 10 free nights.
However, I haven’t confirmed anything about these free nights. I’m sure that’s coming soon.
But actually, it seems that your bonus is xx,000 points or 2 free nights. So it’s not 50k or 2 free nights, it’s 50k OR a smaller number and 2 free nights. Because most of the points are bonuses for completing tasks. Then there is another bonus for completing most of your tasks, and that bonus is a small amount of points or two free nights. Which could be awesome.
With new accounts it seems to be either a giant bonus or 2 nights… not as easy of a decision.
It may be confusing, so you just need to log in and see for yourself.
Running the numbers
Let’s say you went ahead and did 5 of the 5 goals and it took 3 nights total. Because it is possible, assume you book direct on 2 nights and on the app the other. You need two Holiday Inn stays that could be done on Saturdays, and you’d have one free night. That would complete all 3 nights and all 5 tasks.
Let’s just assume that you can find an IHG hotel that is an average of $100 a night. $100 x 3 [needed nights] = $300 for 50,000 points.
That’s at least 5,000 points for $30, plus you actually get a room (oh yeah), and plus you get points you would have earned anyways. But if you can cut down this cost or have a better “Into the Nights” promo… rock it.
It could give more points, require less nights, or you could find cheaper hotels. Via this method I earned tons of points for less than $15 per 5,000 points. Trust me.
In my family, I checked four of our accounts and two promotions were possible in 3 nights, one was possible in 4 nights, and the other possible in 5 nights.
Now the thing that makes this a stunning deal is two things.
1) IHG on Steroids. I’ve written about this on a number of occasions and include it in the Complete Guide to IHG Rewards. The basic concept is that there are a ton of promo codes that you can enroll in that give major bonuses on your first stays. The most I ever got from one stay was 34,420 points (and Gold status) from one 60 Euro night/stay. It’s a roller coaster.
2) The fact that my average redemption is around 9,000 IHG points. Even considering multiple award redemptions at hotels that are 50,000 points a night (like the IC Paris Le Grand and IC Davos), our average redemption is still somewhere around 9,000 points a night. This is largely due to IHG PointBreaks – a sale once every two months where 150+ hotels are listed for 5,000 points a night.
To REALLY understand the ins and outs of the IHG Rewards club, including earning, burning and status, you need to read the Complete Guide to IHG Rewards.
Conclusion
Offers are very different for each person so you need to check! Again, check here. I’m still doing some digging, but this could potentially be amazing… or completely mediocre.
Re IHG on steroids – I know IHG changed the promo reg screen a few months back to mention using non-targeted codes could result in closed accounts – and I know people who have had their long-standing accounts closed. When bonus points used to qualify towards elite status, I picked up platinum renewal in 3 stays using promo codes. I value my RA status, so no more promo codes for me!
You know people personally who have had their accounts closed? Or the 8 mentioned on flyertalk? Because the people in the flyertalk thread haven’t had theirs shut down… which is a very small percentage of people using those codes.
But I totally agree. If you have RA or really truly value your account, you might want to not mess around.
There is an error in the post ( 5k instead of 50 for newbies). Anyways I got 25k miles for 10 stays. Meh.
Thx.
I’ve never registered for miles so never looked into those options.
I’m with Abhishek. Very lame offer this time for me. Anyone getting a nice offer?
I got a decent offer. Complete 5 of the 5 and earn 50,000 bonus points or 2 free nights.
◾Stay 3 nights
◾Book 2 stays on the ihg.com web/mobile sites or IHG App
◾Stay two Saturdays
◾Stay at two Holiday Inns
◾Download and book on the IHG app
I received the same offer…I also thought it was pretty decent, and obtainable.
This is THE default offer. It seems to come in two variations though. 10.5k + 50k OR 4.5k + 50k.
Mine’s the 4.5k variation.
Drew, I’ve asked previously about this, but don’t recall you responding….. whether or not you have RECENTLY been having luck with the IHG promo codes, as part of the IHG on steroids this or that?? Yes, thanks to your tips, it worked great for a lot of us last year, me in particular…. but are ANY of those older codes from last year still working? The spouse got a newer account in the spring, and she followed the same “steroids” guidance, but for her, VERY FEW of those older codes work anymore…. Sure, one of her initial nights got 18k bonus points, but after that, it was slim pickings….
Puhleeeze don’t duck the question and refer us to the flyertalk threads. This is a question for you and Carrie…. have either of you had much luck RECENTLY with the “steroids” (your term) codes on paid stays?
Recently I have no luck on existing accounts that already have the promo codes. They just aren’t putting new ones out right now. But the ones that are remaining are working… however once you use them, they’re done. So on new accounts they should work.
Yea, so that’s the problem, is now it’s not repeatable. 18k, 20k, 22k seems to be average for a 1 night stay if it’s the first stay.
BUT it’s a good addition if you only need 3 nights to complete.
3 nights = that first 18k + 55k from this offer.
But I recently ran a VERY thorough test on an account and got ZERO offers registered. So existing accounts are completely done. Let me be extra clear, if you’ve recently (last 5 months) gone through and registered for promotions… you’re done.
About the current promo, alas, the ihg web site has been mostly chaos this morning…. with terms & conditions appearing, then disappearing, then the whole web site freezing/going down, etc.
I too am curious to know just how the 2 free nights are being promoted…..
You also mentioned the Holiday Inn definition. (when it says “Holiday Inn” it does not mean “Holiday Inn Express” or “Holiday Inn Resorts”. Just plain, regular ole Holiday Inns.)
I saw something within the past hour, re. T&C, which seemed to suggest a difference this time…. that stays at HIE, HIResorts, and even HI Vacation clubs could all count towards a HI # requirement….. but alas, can’t get that T&C to come up at the moment to confirm.
Found one line that speaks partially to the question via T&C:
“Stays at Holiday Inn Resorts and the Holiday Inn Club Vacation properties count as Stays at Holiday Inn brand and Stays at InterContinental Alliance Resort properties count as Stays at the InterContinental brand”
Alas, this guidance is from a T&C link under my offers, the first one for stay 8 nights, etc. — but NOT found for the T&C link for the “stay 3 nights at Holiday Inn”
Another example of the general chaos, and incompetence of IHG web site. Maybe this will get cleared up in the coming days/weeks/months….. more likely not.
(and the usual blogger cop out will be, “YMMV” — and/or don’t complain, lest you draw attention to us)
I could not find that line, but concluded the same in my updated post… Resorts and Vacations = Holiday Inn. Holiday inn “express” will NOT count.
Agree the terms and conditions are a mess and agents do not know a thing. Trust me. So it’s just waiting for their site to work to know for sure. Or until someone confirms. But again, i think HIX is the only non HI.
Definitely check out the IC Davos. We went there in February just after it opened and as a RA received an excellent suite. Sent an email to GM and Rooms Manager. Club food is a little light so not sure if you’ll be able to live off that food. Don’t eat there otherwise as it’s VERY expensive. Go into town for cheaper food.
I was also there in Feb and also got a great suite. And did also feel the lounge was sparse, lol. But breakfast was great!
We were there Feb. 14th-17th. Did you do any skiing while there?
I got an offer for “27,100+27000 bonus points or 2 days” for stay for 7 days, using their credit card, stay in more than 1 property and using their mobile app for booking. I might go for it if i get good properties at very low rates 😉
Drew – i am also interested on any valid bonus codes that i can use. FT thread lists codes valid till Sep 2nd only. Can you please mail me the valid codes, if you dont want to mention them here?
Many of the 2014 ones do work. I just added them top to bottom for myself (I ignored the 2012-2013 ones even if some still work). The ones applicable on my account shows up as valid Sep to Dec.
Also my offer is pretty sweet and already booked it :):
Complete 3 of 3 for 32,000 points or 2 free nights
Stay 4 nights anywhere – 8,000 points
Stay at 2 Holiday Inns – 8,000 points
Book 1 stay using the Bonus Points Package with Breakfast – 2,000 points
Great, Jakob. Thanks a lot for confirmation. I will give them a try. Also congrats on your nice offer 🙂
Just to add to what Jakob said, the promo codes are working for new accounts.
I tried to add more and couldn’t. And as you know, I went thoroughly. They just aren’t adding new ones. I’ll check again soon though. But seems like if you’ve done it recently (last 5 months) you may not be able to enter more.
the website either won’t open or when it does I get an error when trying to log-in. ayyyy
It’s been up and down all day. It let me register for the same account again and gave me a new promo… and then hours later took it back and gave the first one again.
Buuuuggy.
I have two IhG accounts, that is probably against their rules.
All my points are through credit cards. I have never used any of their promotions. One account received a better offer than the other account. There would be an advantage to me in merging the accounts. Should I call them and request that they merge the accounts, or would it be smarter to just use all the points in one of the accounts and then let it disappear? Also are there any additional codes that I can use as a new member without any risk of having my account closed down due to use of non targeted offers, I will be staying 3 nights, including two Saturdays at holiday inns.
Why merge it? Unless your short points for a stay? I’d let it go.
The promo codes (on “steroids”) are generally working for new accounts and not ones that have already used the codes.
I can’t say anything is without risk, but it’s low risk, and if it’s a new account there’s not much to lose.
Sitting here at CP Istanbul booked on points breaks and bummed by my offer 5/6 gives me a little over 39 k total: stay 3 Saturdays, apply for card (my credit isn’t good enough yet for it, so don’t want to take yet), book with app, 3 Holiday Inns, breakfast….OR stay 11 nights :/
Even if I did all 6 it’s only 50k base offer…sorta sucky for this platinum member (2 hrs).
I don’t have much in the way of travel possible in the fall so might skip this one unless some deal comes up on rates or I figure something else out. Too bad since I was hoping to stock up for my RTW trip next year.
So it has to atleast be 50k. Is it 39k as the bonus for completing all of the promos?
Also, I’m not sure but it doesn’t say you have to be approved. Maybe apply and forget your social and see what happens?
And mine says only have to complete 5 of 6. So it might be better than you think.
Any idea if a free night for a BRG would qualify for a stay?
I’ve had single night BRG stays in previous promotions that didn’t post.
I believe multiple night stays with a BRG count as a stay and the non-free nights count as nights.
I don’t think the free night ever counts. But, ymmv.
BRGs are non-qualifying. However, one time a BRG didn’t go through to the hotel. So I paid the hotel and IHG reimbursed me (+ plus extra to compensate for the foreign transaction fee). That counted as a qualifying stay.
To me, this kind of seems like a no-brainer. I have an offer similar to the example in the post. I can book a Holiday Inn for a mattress run for $65. I can essentially get it at no cost after reimbursement from my Arrival for 6500 points. I can MS 6500 Arrival points in minutes. This can potentially be 50,000 points/ 2 nights for pennies.
Great idea. My friend found an even cheaper hotel. Very tempting.
I signed up today and received a confirmation email at 1:34pm with:
500 download app
2000 stay 3 nights
2000 book 2 stays web/app
4000 stay 2 Saturdays
2000 stay 2 holiday inns
I wrote it down, but didn’t think to take a screen shot!!!
I just got another email at 4:16p to register with WORSE requirements
9200 Stay 7 nights
6700 download and book app
2400 Book 2 stays w/ Bonus Points w/ breakfast rate
2000 apply for IHG CC
100 Survey
What the heck!!
When I try going back to the link it doesn’t do anything or show me either.
Take a screenshot!!
I prefer my first option staying 3 nights with 2 stays over 7 nights!!
The same thing happened to me except its now showing the original. Very odd…
I got a really bizarre combination that includes staying 10 nights total, spending three nights at an EVEN hotel in Rockville, MD or Connecticut (neither of which is anywhere near my normal mid-western stay pattern), applying for the credit card, and downloading and booking via the app. All for 44k points or 2 nights. Looks like this one is a no go for me.
Even Hotels. Bahaha. The one chain that has like no hotels. No offense of course. It’s just… how can they expect people to stay at a specific hotel like that. That’s just a joke.
Help!! What do I do I don’t have a smart phone that can download “apps”!!!
Is there a way I can download the app online instead?
You might be able to use a mobile simulator. I’m not overly familiar with these, but I know people use them to run the Swagbucks mobile apps on their computers, so it might work for this too.
I’m not very familiar either… but all you need to do is login on the app and/or book a stay. If you have any friends…
I received the following offer:
complete 3 of these for 25k points or 1 free night; complete all 5 for another 25k points or one more free night.
500 pts – download app & book a stay
2000 – stay 3 nights
2000 – book 2 stays on ihg.com
4000 – stay 2 saturdays
2000 – stay at 2 Holiday Inns
I’m in the same boat as Mike, above: I don’t have a smart phone so cannot download an app. Any other suggestions? Also I seem to have a bonus offer; how do I unlock it?
Another question: I’m new to ihg; can I combine these? For example: stay 3 nights, book 2 on ihg.com, make 2 stays on a Saturday, and 2 at a Holiday Inn. Or, do all of these stays have to be separate, which means I’d have to stay 9 nights.
Thank you!
Not too sure what to make of the smart phone thing yet. I’m thinking there should be a site that lets you act as a mobile. Just don’t know if it will satisfy the promo.
You can definitely combine them. You can do that in 3 nights.
2 holiday inns on saturdays and a free night.
OR 1 holiday inn saturday, 1 holiday inn, and 1 saturday.
Either way that equals 3 nights, and just make sure you’re booking direct and what not.
I have 0 offers. I get 25K points or one free night for each offer I complete but… what are the offers?!
Bonnie’s offer requires 6 stays for 50K points, no thanks.
Most accounts that have a high number of stays say that you need to complete 5 of 6 offers. So you can skip that one.
The site is buggy. I see one that’s doing the same thing. It’s showing 0 goals. If it doesn’t unbug itself you’ll have to call. But I’m just waiting… plus I don’t want to call.
I’m having the same “0 offers” issue….
These promos hate me – I think each of these has been based on 2013 stay patterns when I stayed a lot and had stays in both Australia (where I live) and the USA. So now my offers are ridiculous:
45700 + 18000 pts or 2 free nights or complete 6 of 7 and get 18000 pts or 2 free nights.
9600 – stay 8 nights worldwide
12800 – stay at 4 brands (we only have 3 in Australia!!)
100 – survey
800 – spend $56 on F&B
7200 – stay at 2 IHG resorts
9600 – stay at 2 Intercontinentals
5600 – book 3 stays incl a Friday or Sunday night (stay must incl 2 or more nights)
No way this one is worth it for me!
I can’t find the valid dates for the free nights.have you figured that it?
According to one of the BoardingArea guys, it’s good for one year after you get it.
Love the enthusiasm, Drew.
To make this even sweeter, IHG is 4x right now through the Barclay Rewards Boost portal.
I also got crappy promotion:
Offer points: 26800 and 27000 Bonus points = 53800 points
27000 points or 2 Free Nights
8800 points stay 6 nights
16000 for 2 IC stays
2000 for Bonus Point package reward with breakfast rate
I also have the 0 offers page. It shows 2 bars each with wording Complete one offer and get 25K or 1 free night and then a third bar to unlock bonus offers. Also noticed that when you go to the web page there is a promo code in the address. I tried changing it, and it did accept it and loaded the page….but still no offers. I wonder if it’s possible to change your offer based on the promo code.
Re my page…should I call? Or better to just wait? I couldn’t even login yesterday.
FYI – when I changed the promocode and offerID in the address, it did change my top promo the first time I tried (did not do it on subsequent tries). Gave me just one free night, vs 50K or free night. But doesn’t seem to change it again. Which means…potentially, one could figure out the promocode and offerID for the good offers, manually put them in and sign up for those…maybe?
Hi Drew,
I also got 4500+50000 points offer.
Does stay 3 nights mean, stay 3 consecutive nights?
My husband travels for work. I think we can get most of the things done.
For 2 saturday stays, can I book from hotwire/expedia as well?
Love your site. Are you going to the Saverocity thing in PHX? Do you have an idiot’s guide to the Barclay Arrival card because I don’t get the concept of the reimbursements…Thanks
I need to complete 3 mattress runs. Can I sign up for the “book early and save rate,” and since I’ve already prepaid for the room, do I still need to check into the hotel? It would be great to book a less expensive hotel, out of state. If I do need to check in, can I leave immediately afterwards or do I have to wait until the next day to check out?
Into the Nights renamed, “Into the Fights.” IHG went into everyone’s dashboard some time Fri/Sat and upped the “stay with app”. There are reports on Flyertalk of people having to book “17 nights using app” and “37 nights using app” where previously it was just one night. Someone needs to jump on this story. IHG says everything is now “fixed.”
