One perk that keeps the frugal applying for the Platinum card despite it’s $450 fee is it’s access to lounges via Priority Pass. Perhaps you have noticed that this top membership to Priority Pass will get you into any lounge without any cost but will charge you $27 for a guest. Very few lounges are worth paying that fee so there is a dilemma for couples… One person can get in free but the other one would have to wait elsewhere. However, I figured out a trick or two to avoid one partner going lounge-less.
First understand that Priority Pass only permits one person in, per lounge, per day. But if one person were to have multiple layovers in one day they could go to multiple lounges at no extra cost. It will only charge you more if you have a second person charged to your Priority Pass in one particular lounge, per day. So here are the strategies around it (yes, I have Priority Pass strategies… don’t judge).
Two people, two lounges.
Many airports have multiple lounges that take Priority Pass. On occasion, my wife and I have split up for an hour while we each lounge at different lounges (but we facebook chat each other still). I simply walk her to her lounge and say, “I’d like to sign her in”, but don’t let them add you as a guest! If you want to save on food or need internet, surely your partner won’t mind splitting up while waiting for your flight.
Two lounges, one company.
The best option for a couple is when there are two lounges within one company. I learned this trick in Bangkok and it is often reproduced in big airports. Before going to the airport you can always go to PriorityPass.com and see what lounges are available. If there are two lounges within one company, often you will have access to both lounges with your receipt. Sign in your partner and have them hold the receipt and they’ll be allowed in the other lounge. Then sign yourself into the other lounge and you won’t be charged for either because Priority Pass views them as separate lounges.
Two dates, one lounge.
Like I said, you’re charged per lounge per day. If you wait for a flight or have a layover that crosses midnight time, at least you can get both of you in one lounge after midnight. Check yourself into the lounge before midnight and come back and check your partner in after midnight and you’ll only get charged once.
I did this in Sri Lanka and I made the huge mistake of asking them if I could come back and pay for the other one in 15 minutes (as it was 11:45). They acted extremely offended and treated me as if I were trying to sneak in. “It’s okay, I’ll check just myself in.” but then I think they looked down on me more for leaving my poor wife outside and hungry. I think they were offended that I still was in their lounge. Well, at 12:02 I came back with my wife and checked her in and I can tell they did it reluctantly. It was pretty awkward for the next hour as it seemed my victory had offended them greatly. But honestly, except for that one time, lounges don’t care if you only check one person in, or if you check in at two lounges… they are getting paid by Priority Pass. These are the rules and these tricks aren’t breaking them, but when the cost of Priority Pass goes up, you might have me to blame.
This is excellent. I didn’t know how to get around priority pass select until reading this article!
Not sure about the US but worth noting that Amex Platinum Chargecard holders of the Priority Pass card get one per primary card holder. So I have a PP card and so does my partner.
As of last year each PP card allows the card holder AND a guest access for free. So we can now go in with two friends at no additional cost.
That’s true, so it may be worth getting an extra Platinum card. Kind of wish I had done that years ago.
My card details say “Unlimited inclusive member and accompanying guest visits”. Does this mean I won’t be charged for my guest?
Hi TIF as you know there are several credit cards offering priority pass for free. Whats your opinion on using two different priority pass cards (each having come from a different credit card), both having your name but asking the lounge to sign you in on one and your spouse on another?
I also noticed in my recent trip to BKK using above strategy that they had the name printed on the little slip for the lounge. I didnt try using this slip for another friend travelling with me but this cost us usd20 for some lousy pad thai in the terminal. Did that also happen to you? I was concerned they might check the slip against the boarding pass.
Well, some credit cards offer a not as good Priority Pass membership and you have to pay $27 per visit, not just per visitor.
But if you have two different cards (like Plat card) and you have two different Priority Pass memberships, you should be able to sign in separate no problem.
I’ve never been charged. I just checked in my wife at one BKK lounge, if they wrote names they would have wrote her name. She took the slip to the other lounge and they let her in. Then I checked in on my own at the second lounge.
A midnight is it possible to one person check-in in longue at 23:45, and give the other person a card, then the other person check-in in 00:10, and together are inside longue ?
thanks
I tried the two people two lounges trick and got billed. Priority Pass claims that you can not check someone else in; that it will be billed as a guest whether or not you enter.
I get 10 visits per year with my card. Can I bring a guest with me each time to reduce my allowance twice as fast? ie: 5 visits as a couple.
No way. 10 visits per name appearing on the Card.
Me and my friend both have priority pass membership card
we r arriving Kolkatta airport at midnight 12.30 am
and the domestic flight is on same date but in the evening 5 pm
Can we use priority pass for the day from 12.30 midnight?
Hi man,
one doubt. There’s some way to use priority pass rooms without actually having a flight, just by getting in the airport?
tks,
Some airports have landside lounges that don’t check for boarding passes, like the Plaza Premium in HKG or the IASS in NRT (although this one is à cattle lounge)
I went there recently, and they required me to show my boarding pass
My sister & I both got our Priority Passes from our Card companies but she has never been charged for a single lounge visit so far. Her card doesnt even have a membership number on it. But mine does and am worried that I will be charged $27 per visit. Can someone tell me how this thing actually works? Why are some people charged and some not?
Hi
I haven’t used my priority card this year….
Will it cost me to take 2 friends from Glasgow to Dublin….or do I have free passes for my guests….
Thanks. Joe
My card details say: Unlimited inclusive member and accompanying guest visits
Will my guest be charged?
How do I find out if my card was debited when we flew to Goa from London where we used the lounge facility. My wife does not have aPriority card and she entered the lounge with me. Jayjay
About the second tip, the same company, are the two airside ‘Plaza Premium’ lounges in Hong Kong counted as the same company?
And so I just sign in them and, then when they get the receipt, we go together while I sign in, and they show the receipt to the counter?
I just used my priority pass card in the Montreal airport and was charged 72.00 is this correct.I thought I had a free pass once a year
It depends on your plan. Different cards offer different versions. Some plans don’t get someone in free, nor guests.
