The InterContinental Hong Kong is known as one of the finest hotels in the world for one obvious reason among many: location. Hong Kong is one of my favorite cities; tropical islands meet the largest skyline my eyes have seen – even the airport landing is beautiful. The skyline goes forever but the best view of it is seen from across the bay on the Kowloon side. Which is where the InterContinental sits right on the water next to the cultural museum.
It’s a great experience staying on the Kowloon side for the view of the city, but don’t be deceived as Kowloon has it’s own attractions and for a vacationer, it was definitely the spot to be. I’ll let the views speak for themselves.
The view from the lobby and one of the restuarants.
Even the pool and hot tub had a view!
The immaculate bathroom is hard to capture (they always are) but trust me, it was. The service is great, the room was great (equipt with a Bose system that connected to our iPod), everything is great. My two strongest opinions are: 1) the gift of a good champaign and good chocolate is the best I’ve gotten from a hotel. The bottle might be worth 1 night at some Holiday Inns. I guess they were trying to appease me after denying an email asking for a view. And 2) Ambassador status means nothing to me if it doesn’t help during rewards nights! No upgrade at all because I’m on a points stay. The rooms were going for $800+ when I booked with 40,000 points (actually 30,000 + $60) so in terms of value it was a steal. However, I’m sure this would be one of my favorite hotels if they gave me a room with a view. As it is, it is a great hotel in a great city, with a great location.
One other note: in a city where they have free internet on buses, trains and parks how can they charge $20 per 24 hours for internet! What does their elite status do again? No food, no view, small room, no internet. This isn’t a gripe about the hotel but it sure makes me appreciate Marriott and Hyatt more.
